Cyprus launched its own electronic ID system on January 27th, 2025. Applications for a national electronic identity card (eID) are open; the state will subsidise the first 100,000 issued—30,000 for free and 70,000 for €15.
This launch includes several new functions that help to digitally transform the ID system in the nation:
Ascertia partner JCC is the approved provider of digital trust services for this initiative, having been licensed by the government. We are proud to say that Ascertia products form the foundation of the system – namely SigningHub. Our signing solution plays a vital role in the front-end services this initiative provides to citizens across Cyprus.
At a press conference held to mark the launch of Cyprus’ new digital ID system and complementary applications and tools, Deputy Minister Dr Nicodemos Damianou explained that this is a crucial milestone in the country’s development. He also confirmed that the system complies with the EU’s eIDAS regulation.
Ascertia is excited to have helped this system come to fruition, especially as it can serve as a model for other countries aiming to digitally transform their systems and processes.
Maria Kalli, Digital Trust Services Manager at JCC, said: "With JCC SigningHub, we managed to turn IDME.cy into a dynamic tool for digital document signing in the most user-friendly, secure and efficient way, making a significant leap forward in simplifying paperwork and digitally transforming processes."
Electronic identification (eID) ensures secure access to online services and enables safer electronic transactions. Put simply, an eID serves as digital proof of identity for a citizen, providing a high level of trust when performing online actions and accessing digital services like banking.
Regulation 2024/1183 in the EU established the European Digital Identity Framework, mandating Member States to provide EU Digital Identity Wallets by November 28th, 2026. The initiative aims to empower citizens across the continent to manage their digital identities – a move increasingly important as countries adopt eID initiatives.
According to the European Commission, by 2030:
